Fonts and Your Design

Fonts and how they appear create a vibe or personality for the project you are creating. Make sure it’s the vibe that you are comfortable with.

There are no hard and fast rules, but 2 or 3 fonts is usually enough. Just make sure it all goes together and looks professional.

Today we are going to talk about:

  • How many fonts to use
  • Web Fonts verses Print fonts
  • Header and Body Text Fonts

How may fonts to use?

Your project depends on a couple of things in determining how many fonts to use when creating it:

  1. What is the project – all are different
    1. Magazine ad
    2. Brochure
    3. Website
    4. Newsletter
    5. Business Card
    6. Who will read or view the project
      1. Moms
      2. Kids
      3. Business people
      4. Your Niche Audience
      5. What does your audience expect from you?
        1. Fun
        2. Serious
        3. Calm
        4. Quirky

Web Fonts verses Print Fonts

There are lots of different fonts both paid and free. However, if you want to be certain that your project will print, I suggest that you pay for your fonts when using them in a printed piece.

You are no longer limited to the old standard browser fonts, you can get creative for your website or blog with free fonts from or

Header and Body Text Fonts

Make the header stand out. The font doesn’t have to be heavy and blocky, but it does need to get the user’s attention.

As for body text, DON’T use ALL CAPS, it’s not only annoying to read, but it all begins to run together and the reader won’t hang around to read it.

Using text that is Left-Justified is the easiest to read. However, you can use Right-Justified text when you want to emphasize something and make it stand out more.

Finally, don’t make the mistake of creating a bad design because you want to have ALL the fonts in all the colors in your project. It just makes the project look amateurish and unprofessional.
