Happy Birthday to MTV, they turn 35 today! If you’re a child of the nineties, MTV and its counter parts, VH1 and BET were at the top of your “must see TV” list. I am certain of it. I know for me, there was nothing better than “veggin’ out” in front of the TV on music videos. That one move of using videos to introduce your new song as a music artist, changed the music industry forever. And now MTV is celebrating by creating a new channel, MTV Classic They are bringing back ALL your favorite videos and other programming that helped to put them on the map.
Aside from being elated that you can relive your “coming of age” years, why should you care about what MTV is doing?
Well not only should you care deeply, but you should sit up and take notes and emulate them. What…create a music video channel? No, not unless that’s your business model. I’m referring to repurposing your previously created content to get more exposure, reach a wider audience and make more money with the products you have now. Just like MTV, you probably have a lot of content “lying around” doing nothing, but taking up space. You could take those blog posts, videos and social media posts and rework them a bit and re-release them as brand new content in a different way or on a different platform. It isn’t difficult to turn one piece of content into something else or several somethings.
For example, let’s take one of your blog posts. You could change the first paragraph and maybe add in a graphic or a chart, then create a new, catchy headline and BOOM! you now have a brand new article that’s ready to pitch as a guest post to some of the blogs in your niche.
Another way to repurpose your blog posts is to create an audio and/or video version of each of them. You can then morph them into an audio and/or video podcast and take advantage of the little known, but powerful search engine capabilities of both iTunes and YouTube.
Finally, you can take five of your social media posts that have compelling graphics and turn them into a 5-Day Challenge that helps your audience “do something.” You can then promote the challenge to your social media following and to your list and ask them to share it with their friends and followers so they can sign up also. Create five emails that go out one per day of the challenge and lead the participants back to one of your social media platforms where they get the information. Once there, they will do whatever the challenge directs them to for that day, then come back to the post to report on the outcome. This simple challenge promotes audience engagement, showcases you as the expert for even thinking of it and solidifies your Know, Like, Trust factor with your followers. You just helped them do something amazing and that won’t soon forget that.
Who says POP culture can’t teach us anything? If nothing else, it teaches us to look at the achievements we’ve already made to see how we can relive and repurpose them to bring about more success today.
What is one way that you can revive and repurpose your previously created content?
