Why You should spend more time sleeping

Studies have shown that 40% of Americans get less than 6 hours of sleep per night. That’s a problem because your body needs 7 to 9 hours of restful sleep each night. You know how you feel when you don’t get enough sleep; groggy, irritable, snappy, lethargic, and generally slow—in all areas. But have you thought about how not sleeping enough affects your business? Read on to see why getting better sleep leads to higher sales of your products and services.

Your System Needs a ReBoot

Running a business, managing your life, and staying sane in today’s hectic culture of “see it now, get it now,” can wreak havoc on your body, mind, and spirit. Even though workers have fought for the right to work only 8 hours per day, when you’re an entrepreneur, that’s a dream; because the reality is you’re most likely pulling 12-14 hours, on a good day. Throw in family obligations, even if it’s just you and your spouse, along with civic duties and you’ve got a recipe for burn out on a daily basis. This happens even when you’re “doing what you love.” No one ever told you that doing what you love involves lots of stuff you almost hate.

That’s why it’s so important to give your body, mind, and spirit the gift of sleep each and every night. I’m not just talking about closing your eyes and fighting to keep them closed. I’m talking about restful, “I don’t have a care in the world” sleep. In other words, Knocked Out!

During this downtime of 7 to 9 hours, your body may appear to be doing absolutely nothing, but there’s a lot going on inside.

  • Your cells are being repaired and regenerated
  • Excess fat is being used as the fuel for all those nocturnal activities
  • Your brain is actually cleaning house, meaning getting rid of toxins and excess waste

When you awake it’s almost like you have a new body to start a new day.

You Need The Ultimate Me-Time

Remember what it feels like to wake up energized and ready to take on the world? Sleep does that for you. But even if you get the recommended amount each night, you might just need a little boost during the day. I promise you I’m not talking about anything illegal, it’s called Power Napping.

As kids, in the 60’s and 70’s, you were required to take naps in kindergarten and sometimes even elementary school, now it’s pretty rare. By the time a child gets to first or second grade, naps are a thing of the past and that’s a shame. Sometimes a Power Nap of 20 minutes or so is all you and your body needs to rev up for the remainder of the day.

Don’t look at me with that side-eye; you are an entrepreneur and a savvy one at that. So you know how important it is for you to be on top of your game. You meet with clients, vet prospects, and do the work needed to keep everything going, so you have no choice but to be “ON.” Taking a Power Nap during the day is a me-time break that gives you back your superpowers.

Calgon is Waiting

During REM sleep, the restorative part of sleep, your body and mind get to take a complete vacation from reality. I remember when I was young and I would see the Calgon commercial with the lady in the bathtub and the words saying, “Calgon, take me away!” As a child, you have no idea what that means, but by the time you’ve raised a family, started a business, and dealt with day-to-day adulthood; you’re dreaming about Calgon.

A good, restful night’s sleep gives you the same effect as if you were soaking in that tub with the door closed, behind sound-proof walls. Isn’t that just awesome? It’s the answer you need to not sleeping enough.
