To make it as an entrepreneur, you need two things: a great product/service and a way to tell the world about it.

No matter how awesome your business is, if you don’t have an audience to sell to, you’re headed for failure.

Today, I’m diving deep into one of my favorite ways to let people know about my business – Active Campaign.

I’ll show you how I use it to keep on top of what my audience wants in this ultimate Active Campaign review.

Businesses Best Served by Active Campaign

That’s an easy one for me, the business that wants to make money consistently.

Active campaign is much more than simply an email marketing software. They provide a clear way to “see inside” your client’s mind.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a solopreneur, coach with a full team, or organization with department heads, Active Campaign can and will accommodate your needs.

Active Campaign reports

Active Campaign Reports

One of the main reasons I switched to Active Campaign is their reporting system.

Active Campaign reports open

Each time you send an email, a report is generated that lets you know who opened it and how many clicks it received. You can check by the day and hour. The report also tells you if the email was forwarded, how many people unsubscribed, and how many bounces you received.

Active Campaign reports GEO

In the left-hand column, you’ll see one of the really neat stats in the GEO report which shows you where in the world your subscribers are.

These reports are essential for letting you know how your campaign (how Active Campaign refers to each email) is being received and what actions your subscribers are taking.

There’s also a Contact Report that gives you a breakdown of where your contacts are coming from along with what day and time they’re opening your campaign.

You can even see how many of your Active Campaign contacts are near you.

Active Campaign security

Active Campaign Security

I’ve used Active Campaign since 2017 and I have not had any issues with security. Thank God!

Active Campaign login

They have a funky 2-Factor authentication. When you go to login, you have to enter your unique name you created at signup and then you enter a login and password.

A little clunky, but as long as my data remains safe, I’m good.

Active Campaign Ease of Use

I won’t lie and tell you that Active Campaign is simple to get going. But it’s also NOT a brain twister.

When I first signed up, I did what I always do with new software, I went to their support area.

I’m a self-learner, if you are as well, you’ll really enjoy Active Campaign.

Their support and articles address and help you solve just about any issue you’ll face with the software. If you are unable to find the help you need, you can always chat with them one-on-one.

Active Campaign automations

The most important piece of the Active Campaign puzzle is to understand Automations.

Honestly, that’s what sealed the deal for me in deciding to invest.

I use automations every time I create an event like a masterclass, or summit, or I sell a product or service. Creating any of these things without an automation attached is a waste of time.

I also use automations to get my subscribers to go deeper with me and the services that I offer.

Here’s an example:

A new subscriber signs up. Depending on which lead magnet they come in from, they’ll start receiving related emails automatically.

Within that automation, they’ll have the opportunity to not only learn more about how CSI can help them, but they’ll see that we care enough to provide that information.

Once they decide to purchase or move to the next level, they are automagically moved from that list to a more relevant list.

My main automation is the Biz News Round-up that goes out on Saturdays and includes blog posts, event info, and my latest YouTube videos, among other snippets.

New subscribers get an automated invite to opt into the Biz News Round-up after they’ve been on my main list for a couple of weeks.

Another popular automation is the Friday Accountability email.

I set that up to invite new subscribers to get a weekly email that helps them to keep accountable to themselves.

For either of these automations subscribers can opt out any time.

They are another way to keep in touch with my peeps automagically without much or any ongoing effort on my part.

Learning Active Campaign is like anything else, it’s going to take some time and effort on your part, however the pay-off is tremendous.

Sending emails is easy, basically you point, click, write, and send. It’s the more powerful features and elements that will take thought and practice.

Active Campaign integrations

What Platforms does Active Campaign Integrate With?

The better question would be what platforms does Active Campaign NOT integrate with?

Active Campaign is awesome all on its on, however the over 800 app integrations and counting make it super powerful.

I’m certain that within those apps, you’ll find what you need.

I really couldn’t see running my business efficiently and effectively without Active Campaign and those integrations.

Here are some examples of the integrations I use:

As you can see, automations and integrations are a huge part of my Active Campaign story.

Honestly, it just takes you exploring to see what you can do and then deciding what it is that you want to do. Active Campaign helped my business to grow and to stay profitable and productive. It can do the same for your business.

If you are unsure or confused about any of their features, you can visit their resource center.

Their support is pretty good, for the most part. I use Live chat, sending emails, and conversations to help me understand and use the platform better.

Active Campaign pricing

Active Campaign Pricing

Pricing is very affordable, especially for all that you get with the basics. Active Campaign pricing starts at $17 monthly for 500 contacts using their Lite version. The levels increase in price as your number of contacts increase. The services that I laid out for you with the reports, automation, and tagging system are included in every level. The features increase as the price does. They also offer an annual plan that saves you money over the monthly choice.

Alternatives to Active Campaign

I know Active Campaign is Da’ Bomb (are we still using that phrase? LOL)

AnyWhoo, I wanted to present some alternative platforms to you so you can see for yourself.

Truthbomb: I’m trying not to be biased, but I will slant towards Active Campaign. However, at least you’ll know what choices you have.

Active Campaign VS Mailchimp

When I first realized that email marketing was essential, of course I signed up with one of the most popular email platforms, MailChimp.

We had a great relationship for over 5 years.

I still work with MailChimp. A few of my clients continue to use it and I, myself, have an account that I use for sending emails to people who are part of purchased lists, until I vet them and move them to my Active Campaign account.

The thing that really pushed me over the edge with MailChimp was the fact that each contact, in each list, counted as a separate contact.

Meaning that if I emailed List #1 and List #2 and those 2 lists contained some of the same contacts, they would receive duplicate emails. That’s NO BUENO!

Active Campaign has lists, but they are a tag-based system.

I can have several lists that have the same contacts, but when I send emails, I can manage who gets what by using tags.

What a huge, time-saver and head-ache preventer.

In the last couple of years, MailChimp has also implemented a tag system. However, it does NOT work the same as Active Campaign. And they still use lists as a way of segmenting your audience.

The second issue that drove me to seek a better email provider is MailChimp’s lack of a robust Automation feature, which is exactly why I turned to Active Campaign.

Here’s an example of what I mean:

I send an email to my audience referencing a product I want them to purchase.

The email is part of a tag-based automation.

Once someone purchases, Active Campaign can be set up to automagically remove them from that particular automation sequence, so they stop receiving messages about buying.

That use to annoy me so much with MailChimp. Plus, buyers would email me stating that they already purchased and wanted to know why they were still receiving messages to buy??

MailChimp is still an awesome platform. I just outgrew it.

If you’re just starting out, it’s an excellent choice to get your feet wet.

Constant Contact

Active Campaign VS Constant Contact

I’ve been an online marketer since 2005, that means I’ve used a lot of different email marketing platforms.

I actually forgot that Constant Contact was my first email marketing platform . . . I’m getting old LOL

That says a lot about how I feel about Constant Contact right there. I grew out of it as well.

Before I knew I had to find something that fit my needs better, I was ALL IN.

So much so that I was an official Constant Contact provider. I taught others how to use it.

So what was the “straw that broke the camel’s back?”

At the time I left, they weren’t offering the functionality I never knew I needed.

In my opinion, Constant Contact is for brick & mortar companies who want to send email newsletters monthly. They are not made to service Transformation Specialists in the online marketing world.

Of course they’ve changed . . . some since then. But for me, once I’m gone, I’m gone.

I’m always on a quest to be better and do better.

Active Campaign VS Ontraport

This one hurts my heart a little to write, because I LOVE Ontraport.

However, it’s a little too pricey for me right now.

I think of Active Campaign as the baby sister to Ontraport.

Ontraport is powerful and encompasses everything you need to run your online business. I rank it right up there with Infusionsoft.

Truthbomb: Infusionsoft is not one my choices to review because it’s so confusing to me.

Everything Active Campaign can do, Ontraport does, just in a BIGGER, more comprehensive way. No shade. For me it’s just a price decision.

Click Funnels

Active Campaign VS Click Funnels

OK, first let me say that Click Funnels is an awesome product as well, just not for me.

I’m a designer and I don’t like templated systems because it cramps my creativity.

They have a great system in place and they provide marketing templates for each step of the buying process.

It was a bit confusing for me to use, but once I understood what piece went with what, I was OK.

Click Funnels helped me to understand the marketing process. So, I have to give them kudos for that.

But, to me, their designs are clunky and aren’t a good fit.

Plus, there were some parts of the system that I didn’t want to use and I couldn’t figure out how NOT to use them.

Of course, if I’d liked it, even a little bit, I would have stuck with it and this part of the review would have been very different.

Active Campaign VS Convert Kit

Convert Kit is another great platform that isn’t for me.

I used it a couple times, for clients, but it never gave me an “ahhh, this is it!” vibe.

They have pre-made templates. and like Click Funnels, their sequences are either set up already or they guide you with questions.

For someone who’s brand new to online marketing, this is good place to start.

As you can see, choosing a mail provider for your business is personal. You have to feel connected to what the company does and how they provide their service.

There are too many choices for you to feel stuck and to suffer with your wish list of what you feel will work for you.

When I first started, I had no idea what I needed or wanted. Or what could be possible.

Now, I have a list of requirements. Active Campaign satisfies that list for me, right now. I’m always on the lookout though.
